Martin County Helps Every Dog

and Cat have Their Day

On the morning of January 26th, Martin County Commissioners did their part to help alleviate the current crisis for homeless dogs and cats.  Commissioners proclaimed February 7th 'Adopt a Companion Animal Day' in Martin County. The proclamation also mentions the importance of spaying and neutering companion animals as there are not enough homes for the dogs and cats who already exist.

Nettie, a 4 year old female Chihuahua in need of a home, who is currently in the care of Dogs and Cats Forever, attended the reading of the proclamations and was one of the accepting parties.

Sunday, February 7th was chosen as Adopt A Companion Animal Day as it marks the first time that all animal rescue and shelter groups in Martin & St. Lucie County are coming together at Flagler Park in Stuart for the Friends Furever Adoptathon from 12 to 3 PM.  The Help Us Help Them Fund of the Peagasus Foundtion sponsoring the event.

Hobe Sound Animal Protection League will have a booth at this event with a few of our special adoptable cats and kittens.  We hope to see you there.

FREE SPAY OR NEUTER OF CATS

The Hobe Sound Animal Protection League has announced that as part of its "Operation Catsnip," program, the organization will begin offering free feline spaying or neutering certificates, effective immediately.  Pam Walker, Executive Director of HSAPL, states; "At this time of year, we want to offer a New Years gift to the dedicated pet owners in our community who could use a little help in providing responsible pet care while facing the challenges of our current economy.  Keeping in mind that one unsterilized female cat and her offspring produce over 66,000 cat in 6 years time, we feel that providing this service at no cost to owners will help the entire community."

In the last year and a half, Hobe Sound Animal Protection League has been responsible for the spay or neuter of over 600 cats in this area.  Per Walker, "We are launching a new low cost spay/neuter voucher program and the first 50 requests we receive will be done at no charge.  After that vouchers will be available for $35.  This voucher fee will go towards covering the cost of surgery, distemper vaccine and rabies vaccine for kittens over four months of age."  Dr. Patricia Ries of Savanna Animal Hospital serves as HSAPL's primary veterinarian and it is through her compassion and generosity that HSAPL is able to offer these services to individual pet owners at a reduced cost.

Funding for Operation Catsnip has been arranged through donations and grants.    Without Dr. Reis's help we would not be able to accomplish what we do at HSAPL.

Please call Pam Walker at:  772-463-7386 to reserve a free certificate or purchase a voucher.

SPECIAL NEEDS KITTY

In Need of a FOREVER HOME

Meet Momma Kitty

Momma Kitty has come to be such a sweet, special kitty that had a very rough start.  She came to us from Miami Lakes where she grew up on the streets.  After having a couple litters of kittens that were captured she was finally caught, fixed and given her shots and a safe place to live at Caring Fields.  Over the last two years of being at the sanctuary she has come a long way and learned to trust people and even learned to like people.   She gets along well with other, non-agressive cats.  She enjoys playing with a cat nip toy, a small ball or a scratch pad.   About four months ago she was diagnosed with an eye disease that resulted in her having to lose an eye.  This has not phased her.  She is actually a happier kitty as she is no longer in pain.  She has been in foster care for the past month now and is doing remarkably well adjusting to living in a home.   She gets along great with the other cats in the house, and a small, cat friendly dachshund.  She loves being brushed and having a cozy bed to call her own. Now that she understands what a home is all about she longs to have a forever one of her own.  Call her foster Mom, Sandie, at 772-546-3366 or 561-389-8265.
